ESSENTIAL CAREGIVING GUIDE

Essential Caregiving Guide

A Los Angeles public policy consultant, recuperating from a back operation, discovered that there is no book describing how to manage caregiving services for those in need. So, working with a caregiver friend, he wrote the Essential Caregiving Guide: How to Optimize the Extended Care Your Loved One Needs. The book helps those facing caregiving responsibilities bring order out of what may seem like hopeless chaos.

For most Americans and Western Europeans, the prospect of managing the care of an incapacitated family member on a day-to-day basis is daunting — and increasingly likely. AARP estimates that during the coming decade 117 million Americans, about one third of the country’s entire population, will need some level of caregiving.

The Essential Caregiving Guide breaks down the various aspects of caregiving — medications, exercise, grooming, communications, costs, reporting and so forth — and provides easy-to-use forms to track these activities over time. Some 17 forms are included, and photocopying is encouraged. Some forms need be completed only once, while others will go through several iterations during the caregiving process.

For example, one form titled Essential Medical Data consolidates all the information caregivers and their managers need, including the names and contact information for various physicians and specialists as well as a list of allergies, cautions, medications and the like. Once completed, it needs only occasional updates and can be provided to everyone involved in the caregiving process.

The authors are Godfrey Harris, president of the 51-year-old public policy consulting firm Harris/Ragan Management Group, and Jacqueline Njuki, a licensed nurse. Harris is the author of more than 70 books, including Betrayal in Panama and Lobbycratic Governance, both public policy studies, and Credit the Crocodile, a young adult novel about international wildlife politics set in South Africa. His co-author, a native of Kenya, has 14 years’ experience in caring for persons recovering from surgery as well as those with conditions involving strokes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
